Terminator 2 Judgment Day was made in 1991 and is now 20 years old at the time it was the most expensive movie ever made. It was a box office success earning $204 million in the United States alone and was the highest grossing film of 1991. The film starts with Los Angeles in 2029 AD the world has become a wasteland of wrecked cars, destroyed buildings and charred playgrounds filled with skeletons and skulls. The voice of Sarah Conner (Linda Hamilton) starts narrating “3 billion human lives ended on August 29th 1997 the survivors of the nuclear fire called the war Judgment Day they only lived to face a new nightmare the war against the machines”. Then the foot of the endoskeleton Terminator smashes a skull on the ground and the battle between the human resistance and the technically far superior robotic army of the Terminators begins the robotic tanks open a full frontal assault on the humans who are trained to make use of what shelter the ruined terrain offers them. Flying aircraft search the ground for targets as T-800 Terminators sweep the terrain at places the tanks cannot access. Although they suffer heavy losses the humans manage to destroy several tanks, aircraft and Terminators. They even use old cars as crude assault vehicles but the machines lasers are accurate and unrelenting. Sarah’s voice over continues “Skynet, the computer that controlled the machines, sent two terminators back through time; their mission: to destroy the leader of the human resistance: John Connor, my son. The first Terminator was programmed to strike at me in the year 1984, before John was born it failed. The second was set to strike at John himself when he was just a child”. “As before the Resistance was able to send a lone warrior as a protector for John. It was just a question of which one would reach him first”. Eleven years after Sarah Connor destroyed the original Terminator that was programmed to kill her, two Terminators arrive in Los Angeles from the year 2029. The first is a Terminator (Arnold Schwarzenegger) identical to the one that Sarah first encountered while the second is a new model T-1000 which assumes the identity of a police officer (Robert Patrick). John Connor (Edward Furlong) is now 10 years old and lives with his foster parents Todd (Xander Berkeley) and Janelle Voight (Jenette Goldstein) after his mother was sent to Pescadero State Hospital for the Criminally Insane under the supervision of Dr Silberman. John and his friend go to the Galleria to play arcade games both the fake police officer and the Terminator are searching for him there the fake police officer (T-1000) finds John in the arcades who runs when he sees the police officer. Trapped in a hallway between the Terminator (Schwarzenegger) who produces a shotgun from the box of roses he is carrying and the (T-1000) the Terminator shoots the T-1000 with his shotgun but quickly recovers and fires an entire clip at John the Terminator quickly puts himself in front of John acting as a shield. He puts John into safety and returns fire at the T-1000 who staggers backward and falls to the ground motionless. The T-1000 gets up after healing itself and begins to strug
gle with the Terminator for the gun they force each other into the wall several times until one wall finally gives way and end up in a fashion store. The T-1000 is quicker on his feet and throws Terminator through the shop window and continues chasing John who manages to escape on his motorcycle the T-1000 purses John in a stolen truck through the LA storm drain channels closely followed by the Terminator who is forced to jump his bike into the canal rescue John and blows up the truck with the T-1000 in it. The Terminator explains to John that the other guy is a T-1000 an advanced prototype mimetic poly alloy or liquid metal and can imitate everything of equal size that it has sampled previously by physical contact. The Terminator and John go to Pescadero State Hospital to rescue his mother before she is killed by the T-1000 who wants to take her place so he can get close to John an kill him. John, Sarah and Terminator escape the hospital and drive to an outlying farm in the desert that seems abandoned, her friend Enrique Salceda comes out of hiding at the sound of her voice and welcomes Sarah, John and Terminator and tells them that they are all over the news and wanted by the police. The Terminator tells Sarah that it is Miles Bennett Dyson (Joe Morton) a high ranking employee at Cyberdyne Systems who will invent a new microprocessor that will revolutionize the entire military computer system. Cyberdyne computers will replace human functions and decisions in strategic defense, Skynet goes on line on August 4th 1997 and learns at such a fast rate that it becomes self aware on August 29th and as the humans try to shut it down, Skynet launches a nuclear strike that plunges Earths nations into a nuclear war. Sarah, John, the Terminator and Dyson break into the Cyberdyne Systems building and retrieve the parts from the first Terminator while preparing explosives to destroy all of Dyson’s research, security alerts the police who show up in force. The Terminator manages to destroy most of the police vehicles without breaking his earlier promise to John to refrain from killing. Sarah, John, and the Terminator escape in a SWAT van with the T-1000 in pursuit first in a helicopter and then in a liquid nitrogen truck which crashes against one side of the entrance to a steal mill spilling the liquid nitrogen everywhere freezing the T-1000 as he leaves the truck. Frozen solid like a statue the Terminator shatters the T-1000 with one bullet into hundreds of small pieces, one of the pools of molten metal in the hangar has begun to overflow which begins
to thaw the frozen pieces becoming liquid metal again then the liquid metal forms into one big blob forming into the T-1000 again. John, Sarah and Terminator start going deeper into the steel mill when they come to a large molten metal pool and have to go around but see the T-1000 approaching a few yards away. The Terminators stays behind and fights hand to hand with the T-1000 who manages to stab the Terminator through the power cell with a metal pole deactivating him. The T-1000 now disguised as Sarah goes looking for John but is intercepted by the real Sarah who shoots him, The Terminator reactivates itself using an alternate power source and arrives just in time to shot the T-1000 with his T-1000 causing it to deform and fall into the molten steel below. With the T-1000 destroyed John throws the parts from the first Terminator into the steel but the Terminator says that he too must be destroyed to prevent his technology from being used to create Skynet. Sarah lowers the Terminator into the steel using a winch as the Terminator says goodbye John tearfully begs him to stay then as he sinks into the molten steel he gives a “thumbs up” signal. The film ends with a voice over from Sarah “The unknown future rolls toward us i face it for the first time with a sense of hope because if a machine a Terminator can learn the value of human life maybe we can too.”
