RoboCop was made in the summer of 1986 and released in July 1987 the film was a commercial success and grossed over $8 million in its opening weekend  making it the 16th most successful movie of1987.  The film is now 24 years old the film is set in the near future in Detroit Michigan where violent crime is out of control and the city is in financial ruin,  OCP Omni Consumer Products funds and runs the Detroit Police Department  a  newcomer to the local Metro Precinct in Detroit Alex Murphy (Peter Weller) arrives at the station after being transferred in from another department he speaks to Sergeant Warren Reed who gets Murphy a set of riot armor and introduces Murphy to the other cops who are not happy about how the department is being run by OCP  this angers the cops who are considering going on strike until OCP creates better working conditions. Murphy then meets officer Anne Lewis (Nancy Allen) who is his new partner and they leave to go on patrol.  At OCP Headquarters Dick Jones (Ronny Cox) presents his new law enforcement robot ED-209 to the other executive’s which he believes will end crime in Old Detroit,  Jones asks a younger executive to assist him in demonstration by aiming a gun at ED-209 but ED-209 does not sense the end of hostilities and brutally guns down the younger executive.  OCP’s CEO (known only as The Old Man) is not happy with Jones es performance when another young executive Bob Morton (Miguel Ferrer) uses the opportunity to propose his RoboCop program directly to the head of OCP who is impressed by Morton’s idea and decides to put his project up as priority,  Dick Jones is not pleased at being upstaged.  Lewis and Murphy are out on patrol when they get a call about an armed robbery, in pursuit of the armed robbers Lewis and Murphy track them to an abandoned steel mill where they are separated.  Lewis is knocked unconscious by a fall and Murphy is captured and attacked with shotguns,  his body is brutally ripped apart while Lewis can do little more than watch.  Clarence Boddicker (Kurtwood Smith ) shoots Murphy in the head, Murphy is rushed to a nearby hospital but there is little that the doctors can do and he is declared dead.  Bob Morton’s team take his dead body and replace it with a cybernetic one, Wiping his mind they overwrite it with computer programs that make this new creature the perfect police officer RoboCop  is also given three Prime Directives to operate under Serve the Public Trust,  Protect the Innocent, Uphold the Law. Unknown to Morton and most of his staff a fourth directive (listed only as “Classified) is also uploaded.  RoboCop is brought to the Metro North Precinct and assigned to work with Sergeant Reed’s police officers,  Lewis is still at the same Precinct and sees RoboCop at the targeting range performing the same type of gun spin maneuver that her old partner once used.  RoboCop patrols the city and proves extremely effective at stopping violent crime,  Bob Morton’s overwhelmingly successful project gets  him a promotion to OCP vice president but Dick Jones warns him that his humiliation won’t go unanswered. RoboCop is at rest when he When he starts remembering bits of his past in dreams he decides to go after the gang that killed him and the corporate executive that is protecting them.  Emil (Paul McCrane) is robbing a gas station when he is stopped by RoboCop,  Emil recognizes him as the police officer he and his friends shot and killed he shouts out “We killed you!!” as he tries to make his escape on his motorcycle RoboCop shoots out his tires and takes Emil into custody.  At the police station RoboCop uses the police mainframe to look up Emil’s data and known associates one of the names on the list is Clarence Boddicker whose rap sheet includes charges for the murder of Officer Alex J Murphy.  Bob Morton is at home with two hookers when he is ambushed by Clarence Boddicker who is revealed to be working for Dick Jones he orders the two hookers to leave and kill’s Morton and then blows up his home.  At a cocaine plant RoboCop locates Boddicker and his gang killing most of the residents,  he capture’s Boddicker brutally beating him as he begs for his life he reveals his connection to Dick Jones,  RoboCop realizes that he is an officer at heart and cannot murder Clarence so he takes him back to the station.  Boddicker demands his phone call and calls Dick Jones who arranges Clarence’s release.  RoboCop confronts Dick Jones at OCP Headquarters and attempts to arrest him but mysteriously begins to shut down,  Jones explains that RoboCop was programmed to not take action against an OCP Official (this is his Fourth Directive).  After Jones boasts of his crimes he activates ED-209 which attacks RoboCop damaging him but he manages to escape by running down stairs ED-209 cannot follow,  he makes it to the parking garage where he escapes with the help of his former partner Anne Lewis.  Lewis and RoboCop hideout in the old steel mill factory,  Robocop removes his helmet revealing the face of Murphy.  Murphy asks what happened to his wife and son, Lewis tells him  that they moved away after Murphy’s funeral to start a new life.  Supplied with military weapons 50-caliber rifles by Dick Jones Boddicker and his gang go to the old steel mill factory to kill RoboCop,  Lewis leads the gang on a car chase where most of the members are killed  including Emil who is melted by a vat of toxic waste and is accidentally run over by Clarence during the car chase.  Lewis is injured while Murphy is pinned down by a pile of scrap metal but Murphy is able to stab Clarence in the neck ending Boddicker’s reign of terror.  RoboCop returns to OCP Headquarters where he is confronted by a ED-209 he destroys the ED-209 using the 50-caliber rifle taken from the steal mill.  RoboCop reveals evidence of Dick Jones es crimes to the OCP board of directors when Jones grabs a gun and takes the CEO hostage but as he starts making demands the CEO fires him, thus invalidating his protection under Directive Four,  RoboCop immediately shoots Jones sending his body flying through the boardroom window screaming as he speeds toward the pavement below.  The CEO (The Old Man) thanks RoboCop for his actions asking him his name RoboCop pauses for a second before responding “Murphy”.
