During the memory implantation procedure Quaid has a violent outburst and tries to break free, ranting about how his cover has been blown and how men are coming to kill him. The technicians manage to sedate Quaid, it is initially suspected that Quaid was acting out the secret agent part of the trip but wasn’t possible because that part of the trip had not been implanted yet. The technicians realize that Quaid’s memory has been erased, covering up there involvement they erase his memories of Rekall and send him home in a taxi. Quaid wakes up in the taxi just before it drops him off, after getting out the taxi Quaid is met by his work college Gary who invites him for a drink but Quaid turns him down. As Quaid begins to make his way up the stairs he is forcibly grabbed by five men, led by Gary they move Quaid out of sight behind the stairs and begin to question him about mars. Quaid breaks free and kills all the men including his friend, horrified at the spectacle he rushes home. He enters his apartment an turns off all the lights and tells Lori he´s just been attacked, Quaid goes into the bathroom and washes off all the blood from his encounter. As he exits the bathroom he is shot at by someone in the dark, he manages to avoid being shot and grabs hold of that person and turns on the lights only to discover its his wife Lori. Quaid releases his grip questioning why she would do this in doing so she begins to attack him again this time with a knife. He disarms her once again this time pointing a gun at her, she tells him that everything he remembers including their marriage is a series of false memories implanted. While Quaid was in the bathroom Lori called Richter (Michael Ironside) her husband and fellow spy. Lori tries to keep Quaid talking until Richter can arrive with his men, but Quaid notices several men with guns arriving at their apartment building on the monitor in there apartment. Quaid knocks Lori out and leaves the apartment before Richter arrives and heads for the local subway, chased by Richter and his men Quaid manages to escape and finds a safe haven in a cheap motel. Richter and Lori both work for Vilhos Cohaagen (Ronny Cox) the corporate dictator of Mars. In his hotel room Quaid receives a call from someone who claims to be his friend and that they both worked for the Agency and if he ever disappeared to come and find him, so here he was. He tells Quaid to wrap a wet towel around his head because he has a tracking device implanted in his head and wrapping a wet towel around his head disrupts the signal. Quaid does this then the man tells him to keep moving and leaves a suitcase by the telephone he´s calling from and leaves. Quaid leaves his hotel room and picks up the suitcase and heads for a taxi, when he is spotted by Richter and his companion in his car. Quaid makes it to a taxi and demands him to go, but the taxi is operated by a robot taxi driver who does not understand the instructions he was given. Quaid in a hurry to leave removes the robot taxi driver from his position and takes control of the taxi and speeds away, as he does Richter and his companion fire at the taxi in an effort to stop it, but they are unsuccessful and Quaid escapes. Quaid stops the taxi near an old abandoned cement factory and leaves the vehicle as he walks away the robot reactivates the taxi and heads straight for Quaid, who narrowly gets out the way and then the taxi hits a wall and explodes. Quaid makes his way into the abandoned cement factory and finds a place to look inside the suitcase which contains fake IDs, money, weapons and a video recording of himself. The video informs him that he was once Hauser the right hand man of Cohaagen and that he met Melina (Rachel Ticotin) a member of the Mars resistance against Cohaagen who convinced him to switch sides. Hauser instructs Quaid to get to Mars and set things right, saying Quaid has enough information in his head that can destroy Cohaagen. Quaid arrives at the Mars colony and avoids capture by Richter and Cohaagen’s men. Many of the people on Mars are mutants with deformed features and psychic abilities caused by the mixture of radiation and shoddy air quality provided by Cohaagen. Quaid befriends Benny (Mel Johnson Jr) a mutant taxi driver who drives him to Venusville to meet Melina (Rachel Ticotin), who after she hears his story doesn’t believe him and orders him to leave at gunpoint. Quaid is in his hotel room, when he is visited by Dr Edgemar (Roy Brocksmith) who explains that everything he has experienced so far has been part of the false memories implanted by Rekall that have gone wrong. Quaid doesn’t believe him, so Dr Edgemar has Lori enter the room who pleads with Doug to listen to Dr Edgemar and that she is very concerned for him. Dr Edgemar offers Quaid a pill supposedly a symbol of his desire to return to reality, saying that if he takes the pill he will wake up safely at the memory implant facility. If he doesn’t take the pill, he will end up lobotomized. Quaid seriously considers the offer, but spots a drop of sweat moving down Dr Edgemar’s head. Quaid shoots him, causing a team of men to breach the wall and capture Quaid. Lori and Cohaagen’s men tie Quaid up who is unconscious and wait in the hallway for another lift, as the lift arrives and the doors open Melina is inside and opens fire killing Cohaagen’s men. Lori attacks Melina and they fight, when Quaid wakes up he grabs a gun and shoots the knife out of Lori´s hand who is about to kill Melina. He shoots Lori in the head killing her, as Melina unties his hand she explains that the leader of the resistance Kuato (Marshall Bell) who is a mutant can help Quaid remember. Melina, Quaid and Benny escape from Richter and his men to the resistance hideout, in revenge for aiding in their escape Cohaagen disables the ventilation system to the population of Venusville slowly causing them to die from lack of oxygen. Quaid is taken to another room by George (Marshall Bell) who opens his shirt and from his chest area appears Kuato a mutant. Kuato reads Quaids mind and sees a vision of alien ruins underneath Mars that Cohaagen has kept secret. Just then the rebel hideout is attacked by Cohaagen’s forces. The rebels are slaughtered as Quaid, Melina, Benny and George/Kuato flee as the group prepares to escape, Benny shoots George/Kuato revealing himself as an enemy agent. Quaid kneels down next to Kuato who tells him to start the alien reactor and free mars just as Richter shoots him in the chest and kills him. Quaid and Melina are taken before Cohaagen who explains that this was all a trap devised by Hauser and Cohaagen to infiltrate the resistance. Quaid doesn’t´t believe this, so Cohaagen shows him another video of Hauser with Cohaagen at his side congratulating Quaid on helping to wipe out the rebels. Quaid and Melina are taken to a memory implant facility so that Hauser can be restored and Melina reprogrammed to be subservient. Richter punches Quaid in the face before leaving with Cohaagen. During the memory programming procedure Quaid escapes from his chair frees Melina and kills the guards. They make their way to the alien ruins, as Quaid tells Melina that Kuato helped him remember that the ruins are actually reactors that will make enough air for the entire planet and would thus cause Cohaagen to lose control of Mars. On the way to the ruins they are attacked by Benny, who is driving a gigantic mining machine. Quaid picks u a hand held drill and impales Benny through the cockpit. At the ruins Richter is waiting with a large group of Cohaagen’s men. Quaid utilizes a hologram device to confuse the soldiers while he and Melina gun them all down. Richter escapes and boards a freight elevator that ascends to the ruins control panel. Quaid jumps on and the two fight, ending with Richter having his arms ripped off and falling to his death. Quaid makes it to the reactor control area and is about to start the reactor, when Cohaagen appears and shoots at his hand to stop him from turning on the reactor. Cohaagen has rigged the facility to explode and prepares to shoot Quaid, when he is saved by Melina. Cohaagen activates the bomb, but Quaid throws it away before it detonates and the explosion rips a hole in the wall, causing depressurization. As Quaid and Melina hang on for dear life, Cohaagen is sucked into the atmosphere, where he dies. Quaid manages to turn the reactor on just before he and Melina are sucked into the atmosphere as well, but they are saved as the reactor releases air throughout all of Mars. The atmosphere washes over the planet. The people who were dying can now breathe again. As Quaid and Melina look at the new Mars sky, Quaid wonders if he really is having a dream.

Amanda´s autopsy report comes back revealing that the drugs she took were laced with drain cleaner, if she haden´t jumped she would still be dead, making her death a homicide. Riggs and Murtaugh inform Amanda´s father Michael of her death, who says he was trying to contact Murtaugh to get Amanda out of her drug and pornography habits. Riggs and Murtaugh go to question a pimp known to have connections to Amanda. Once at the address they find a drug lab on the premises and are shot at by the pimp, Murtaugh shots back wounding him in the leg bringing him down they move in to question him as Riggs begins to help him up the pimp pulls out another gun, Riggs shoots him and kills him saving Murtaugh´s life. Riggs finds it suspicious that the only witness to Amanda’s suicide is a prostitute named Dixie, who was working away from her usual location that night. They deduce Dixie was the one who poisoned Amanda and then posed as a witness to cover her actions. The next morning Riggs and Murtaugh go to Dixie’s home to question her, but as they approach the house it explodes. Riggs looks through the wreckage of the house and finds part of the bomb, a mercury switch. A neighborhood child remembers seeing a man at Dixie’s home earlier that day, who had a special forces tattoo similar to Riggs own. Seeing a connection Riggs and Murtaugh decide Michael Hunsaker knows more than he´s telling, Riggs and Murtaugh confront him at his home. Hunsaker admits to Murtaugh he´s involved in a heroin smuggling operation run by ex Vietnam War Special Forces known as Shadow Company. The leader of the group is a retired general Peter McAllister (Mitchell Ryan) the former commander of Shadow Company and his chief enforcer Mr Joshua (Gary Busey). Hunsaker used his bank to launder the drug profits and when he wanted out McAllister had hs daughter killed so he wouldn’t´t talk. Murtaugh attempts to make Hunsaker reveal the entire operation, Joshua makes a surprise appearance in a helicopter and shoots Hunsaker dead. As Riggs and Murtaugh attempt to investigate Dixie’s connection Mr Joshua attempts to kill Riggs (which they believe is successful, but Riggs had been wearing a bulletproof vest) and then kidnap Murtaugh’s daughter Rianne. Using Riggs presumed dead status to their advantage, Murtaugh agrees to meet Shadow Company in the desert to exchange himself for Rianne, knowing Shadow Company’s plan is to kill them all anyway. Riggs is some distance away providing sniper cover, Murtaugh attempts to make Rianne flee, but ultimately the three are captured. Riggs, Murtaugh and Rianne are taken back to McAllisters night club, where he tortures Murtaugh for information by beating him and rubbing salt into Murtaugh’s bullet wound. McAllister demands to know which of their drug shipments have been compromised, eventually threatening Rianne when Murtaugh is not forthcoming, refusing to believe Hunsaker told them nothing. Riggs is tortured with electric shocks, but manages to free himself and then rescues both Murtaugh and Rianne. The pair then fight their way free, finding themselves in a downtown L.A nightclub. Riggs chases Joshua on to the street and attempts to cut him off on the freeway, though Joshua ultimately escapes. Murtaugh goes after McAllister, he finds McAllister trying to flee in his car. Murtaugh kills his driver and Murtaugh watches as the car crashes on Hollywood Boulevard and is blown up by a live hand grenade. Riggs tells Murtaugh that Joshua has escaped, Murtaugh says to Riggs Joshua knows where i live and the two head to Murtaugh’s home. Joshua arrives at Murtaugh’s home shooting it up to gain entrance only to discover that Riggs and Murtaugh are already there and arrest joshua. Riggs wanting revenge proposes “a shot at the title” which Joshua eagerly accepts. Riggs engages Joshua in hand to hand combat on Murtaugh’s front lawn, after a brutal fight Riggs locks Joshua in the Triangle Choke hold. Riggs releases the pressure and lets him live,as Joshua is being arrested Joshua overpowers two officers and attempts to shoot Riggs, Riggs and Murtaugh both draw and fire, killing Joshua. Murtaugh and Riggs are now solid friends and Riggs spends Christmas Day at the Murtaugh home with Roger’s family. Riggs brings his dog Sam to be a friend to the Murtaugh family cat, Burbank (which proves to be disastrous). Riggs also gives Murtaugh a gift the unfired bullet which he had been saving to commit suicide, as he does not need it anymore.
