In Budapest to intercept a courier holding Russian nuclear launch codes, IMF agent Trevor Hanaway (Josh Holloway)is killed by assassin Sabine Moreau (Léa Seydoux) who is works for someone code named “Cobalt”. The other members of Hanaway’s team Jane Carter (Paula Patton) and newly promoted field agent Benji Dunn (Simon Pegg) extract Ethan Hunt and Hunt’s source Bogdan from a Moscow prison. Hunt is assigned to lead Carter and Dunn in infiltrating secret Moscow Kremlin archives to locate files identifying Cobalt, who is known to be a Russian consultant with a goal of detonating a nuclear bomb. During the mission, someone broadcasts across the IMF frequency alerting the Russians to Hunt’s team. Although Dunn and Carter escape a bomb destroys the Kremlin and Russian agent Sidorov arrests Hunt, suspecting him as responsible for the attack. The IMF extracts Hunt from Moscow and the Russians have called the attack an undeclared act of war which forces the US president to activate “Ghost Protocol” a black operation contingency that disavows the IMF. Hunt and his team are to take the blame for the attack, but will be allowed to escape from government custody in order to track down Cobalt. Before Hunt can escape the IMF’s secretary (Tom Wilkinson)is killed by Russian security forces led by Sidorov, leaving Hunt and intelligence analyst William Brandt (Jeremy Renner)to find their own way out. Hunt identifies Cobalt as Kurt Hendricks (Michael Nyqvist)a Swedish born Russian nuclear strategist who believes the weak must die for the strong to survive, so he plans to start a nuclear war to initiate the next stage of human evolution. Hendricks bombed the Kremlin in order to acquire a Russian nuclear launch control device, next he needs the activation codes from Moreau in order to launch a nuclear missile at America. The exchange between Moreau and Hendricks’s right hand man, Wistrom is due to take place at the Burj Khalifa in Dubai. Hunt’s team members separately convince Moreau and Wistrom that they have made the exchange with one another. However, Moreau identifies Brandt as an agent. While Hunt chases Wistrom only to realize that Wistrom is actually Hendricks in disguise, escaping with the codes Carter detains Moreau. Moreau attempts to kill the inexperienced Dunn and Carter kicks her out a window to her death. Brandt accuses Carter of compromising the mission for revenge against Moreau, but Hunt accuses Brandt of keeping secrets from them as he has displayed fighting skills typical of an analyst. While Hunt seeks more information from Bogdan, Brandt admits he was assigned as security detail to Hunt and his wife, Julia in Croatia. Brandt says that while he was on patrol, Julia was killed by a Serbian hit squad prompting Ethan to pursue and kill them before he was caught by the Russians and sent to prison. Bogdan and his arms dealer cousin inform Hunt that Hendricks will be in Mumbai. Hendricks facilitated the sale of a defunct Soviet military satellite to Indian telecommunications entrepreneur Brij Nath. The satellite could be used to transmit the order to fire a missile. The team heads to India to prevent Hendricks from using the satellite, which can be controlled from computers at Nath’s home. While Brandt and Dunn infiltrate the server room to deactivate the satellite, Carter gets Nath to reveal the satellite override code. But Hendricks has anticipated Hunt’s plan and uses a virus to turn off Nath’s servers before sending a signal from a television broadcasting tower to a Russian nuclear submarine in the Pacific to fire at San Francisco. Hunt pursues Hendricks and the launch device while the other team-members attempt to bring the broadcast station back online. Hunt and Hendricks fight over the launch control device before Hendricks jumps to his death with it to ensure the launch. Dunn kills Wistrom, allowing Brandt to restore power to the station and enabling Hunt to deactivate the missile, while the fatally wounded Hendricks witnesses the failure of his plan just before he dies. Hunt is then confronted by Sidorov, who sees Hunt has stopped the missile, proving the IMF is innocent in the Kremlin bombing. The team reconvenes weeks later in Seattle. Hunt introduces the team to longtime colleague Luther Stickell and then issues new assignments. Dunn and Carter accept, but Brandt refuses. Hunt reveals that Julia’s death was staged as he knew he could not protect her and used her death as a pretext to infiltrate the prison, where he believed he would find men associated with Cobalt. Relieved of guilt, Brandt accepts his mission while Hunt watches Julia from afar. She spots him, and they share a smile before he embarks on his next mission.
Avery disrespects her parents and despite being forbidden to do so, sneaks out of the house to go to a party with her friend Kendra (Emily Meade). Sarah appears bored of life as a housewife and yearns for more in her marriage while Kyle seems to harbor a hidden aversion towards his wife. Just as Kyle is about to leave for a business transaction the house is suddenly invaded by a gang of burglars masquerading as police. The thieves, Elias (Ben Mendelsohn) his stripper girlfriend Petal (Jordana Spiro) his younger brother Jonah (Cam Gigandet) and a large intimidating man named Ty (Dash Mihok) tell Kyle and Sarah that they have been spying on them for some time and are aware of the large amounts of cash and diamonds hidden in their home. They demand Kyle to open a safe hidden in the wall but, despite a threat to utilize a syringe containing lethal injection chemicals, he defiantly refuses believing that he and Sarah would be killed if he simply gave into their demands. Sarah meanwhile, recognizes Jonah through his mask. Through a series of Jonah’s flashbacks and a conversation with Elias, it is strongly implied that Sarah and Jonah had a previous affair when the latter was employed as a technician to install the house’s security system. Unbeknown to Elias, Sarah secretly steals the syringe from him during this conversation. Having left her party in disgust Avery returns home and after a brief chase is also captured and taken to her parents. Elias appeals to Kyle, claiming that he needs money to pay for a kidney transplant for his dying mother and that if Kyle refuses to comply, he will instead take one of Avery’s kidneys. Sarah catches Elias off guard and holds him hostage with the syringe. Forced into a Mexican standoff the thieves compromise by letting Avery escape in exchange for Kyle opening the safe. He does so revealing it to be completely empty. Kyle explains that he is actually bankrupt and has no money his house and all of his possessions were bought on loaned credit. Enraged Elias breaks Kyle’s hand and instead demands material compensation by taking Sarah’s prized diamond necklace. However Kyle reveals that this too is a fake cubic zirconia replica and is completely worthless. Ty recaptures Avery from outside and brings her back into the house. Kyle volunteers for his own kidney to be taken instead of his daughter’s, but Elias reveals that it was a ploy and that he hated his mother who is already dead. Ty grows impatient after receiving a phone call and commands Elias to hurry up. Kyle realizes that the burglars are themselves being coerced into committing the heist against their will. The thieves then separate the Miller family, with Kyle and Avery being tied up and guarded in the living room and Sarah being pursued by Jonah in the kitchen. Jonah states to Sarah that he still loves her and promises that she and Avery will be left unhurt. Meanwhile, Kyle uses a lighter to burn both his own and Avery’s binds they attempt an escape and set off the house’s security system. Kyle ends up in a struggle with Ty and despite Ty’s superior strength and fighting skills Kyle manages to inject a portion of the syringe chemicals into his arm, causing him to fall unconscious. Thinking that Ty is dead, Elias shoots Kyle in the leg and reveals his true motives that he is a drug dealer working for an organized crime syndicate. Shortly after being given a job to sell $180,000 worth of cocaine, Elias and Petal were carjacked at gunpoint and all of their shipments were promptly stolen. Faced with threats of retribution, Elias was then forced to commit a heist to pay off his debt. Jonah, who had previously seen the Miller’s residence suggested it as a place to rob. Avery attempts to run out of the house again but is caught by Jonah. Under the threat of her parents being killed, she is forced to answer a call from the security company and successfully convinces them to call off the police. However a security guard shows up nevertheless, with Sarah ordered to make him leave, but the security guard catches sight of Jonah and recognises him as a colleague prompting Jonah to shoot him in the head. Kyle reveals to Elias that the only thing of any worth on him is his life insurance. Desperate and out of options, Elias kicks Kyle down and prepares to kill him. At the last second, Avery remembers the money she saw at the earlier party and pleads with the thieves that she can help them steal it from the party if they spare her father’s life. Elias reluctantly agrees to the proposition and sends Petal to supervise Avery as she drives to the party house and ensure that she keeps her word. Although Avery’s initial idea is to seduce Jake and then steal his money, she is horrified when Petal begins to deliriously proclaim that she plans to massacre all of the party guests and then take the cash. Seeing a swerving road ahead Avery accelerates the car, unbuckles Petal’s seat belt and intentionally crashes into a telephone pole fatally injuring Petal. At the Miller home Sarah learns that Kyle had discovered a picture of her kissing Jonah from security footage and was suspicious for some time that she had been unfaithful. Ty reawakens from his stupor and attacks Sarah. Enraged, Jonah tackles Ty and the two fight. Just as Ty is about to strangle Jonah to death Elias shoots him in the back for trying to kill his brother. However in his dying breath, Ty reveals to Elias that he had been set up all along the “robbers” stealing his cocaine shipment were actually fellow members of the same crime organization and the operation was done in order to blackmail him into stealing more money for them. More damningly Ty also claims that Jonah had masterminded the entire plan so he could have an excuse to return to the Miller residence and profess his love to Sarah. Elias is shocked by the allegations but refuses to believe them. Sarah and a wounded Kyle escape to the tool shed behind the house and are pursued by Elias and Jonah. After a brief fight the thieves discover a large amount of money hidden inside the shed, Kyle reveals that he had sold Sarah’s real diamond necklace and was saving the money as a nest egg for his family. As Elias and Jonah begin to collect the cash, Avery appears and points a gun at them. Elias calls her bluff and aims his gun at Sarah but he is shot and killed by Jonah for this. Jonah tries again to convince Sarah that she belongs with him but she rebuffs his offers, calling him insane. In an attempt to sacrifice himself Kyle tells his wife and daughter to run while setting the money in the tool shed on fire. He also shoots Jonah’s foot with a nail gun, trapping him in the shed. While Avery goes to call the police, Sarah tries to help Kyle but she is grabbed in a last ditch effort by Jonah who is convinced that it is destiny for her to die together with him in the fire. However Kyle then shoots him in the neck, causing him to fall and become engulfed in the flames. Sarah then carries Kyle away to safety just as the shed collapses. In the backyard Kyle tries to tell Sarah to let him die so that she and Avery can survive on his life insurance but she refuses, stating that she loves him regardless of whether he has money or not. Avery runs back to her parents announcing that help is finally on the way. The three family members embrace as the real police arrive and surround the house.
The film begins Six months after the events of Underworld: Evolution, humans capture the vampire Selene (Kate Beckinsale) during “the Purge” a global military crusade to exterminate Vampires and Lycans after mankind learns of their existence. Humans call them “Non Humans” and “the Infected”. Twelve years later the human governments have concluded the genocidal campaigns against the vampires and lycans. They have annihilated 95% of the vampire race and believe the lycans are extinct. Selene dubbed “Subject 1″ is freed from cryogenic suspension by “Subject 2″ and escapes the medical corporation named Antigen. The corporation is ostensibly trying to make an antidote for the virus that creates vampires and lycans. Selene starts to have strange visions after her escape, which she follows believing them to be linked to her lover the vampire lycan hybrid Michael Corvin. The visions lead her into a building where she runs into David (Theo James) a fellow vampire. While talking to David, Selene has another vision. Following the vision, she discovers not Michael but a young girl called only as “Subject 2″ also known as Eve (India Eisley) later revealed to be a hybrid and the daughter of Selene and Michael. David, noting that Eve has been injured by the lycans and is somehow not healing, takes them to his coven. David’s father, Thomas (Charles Dance) does not welcome Selene and Eve. Blaming Selene for provoking the destruction of the vampire race, he stuns her with the news that Michael died twelve years ago. A vampire woman offers some of her blood to the wounded Eve, which she refuses to drink at first implying that she has never drunk blood before. With Selene’s encouragement, she accepts the gift and heals extremely quickly. Dr Jacob Lane (Stephen Rea) director of Antigen is revealed to be a lycan alongside his son Quint (Kris Holden Ried). The “antidote” the corporation has been working on for many years is actually to make lycans immune to the deadly effects of silver on their species and to enhance their physical abilities. Eve’s hybrid genetic code is required to achieve this, so Lane sends Quint with other lycans to the vampire coven to recapture her. Meanwhile, expecting a human attack at any moment, David tries to rally the vampires’ resistances to fight back while his father orders everyone to evacuate and hide. Most of the vampires stay and arm themselves heavily. As expected the lycans arrive in large numbers killing numerous vampires. Selene encounters a gigantic “super lycan” later revealed to be Quint, whose body is changed by injections using Eve’s genetic material. Selene is knocked unconscious under a pile of rubble during the fight, Eve is turned over to the lycans by Thomas in exchange for their departure and David is mortally wounded during the battle. Selene decides to save Eve but first revives David using her immortal blood, given to her by Alexander Corvinus in Evolution. Able to survive in sunlight, Selene enlists the help of Detective Sebastian (Michael Ealy) a human who tried to investigate Antigen earlier in the film. Sebastian agrees to help save Eve, admitting he was married to a nurse who was bitten at work and became a vampire. When authorities were going door to door searching for Vampires and Lycans, instead of becoming another victim of the Purge his wife decided to expose herself to the daylight rather than suffer at the hands of humans. Selene destroys part of Antigen’s headquarters using silver gas explosives, forcing Dr Lane to move Eve out of the building to perform an operation to create more of the antidote. Selene escapes from the lycans in the building. In the process she finds Michael cryogenically frozen in a laboratory. She punctures his cell with a gunshot to defrost him. Escaping in a van Dr Lane is intercepted by Sebastian and then by Selene, who causes the van to crash. Quint arrives, transforms into his super lycan form and fights Selene. Eve awakens on her stretcher and frees herself from the van and begins to fight Dr Lane who has also injected himself with the super lycan formula used on Quint. Sebastian and the revived David aid Eve in her fight until she kills Dr Lane by ripping his throat out. Meanwhile, Quint corners Selene in a small cement guardroom but is forced to revert to his human form to get to her, only for Selene to shove an activated silver based grenade into Quint’s body. He heals instantly, trapping the grenade inside. Panicking Quint halfchanges back to his lycan form but it is too late and he explodes. Selene goes to free Michael but finds he has already escaped. Eve sharing his vision learns he is on the roof. Selene, Eve and David run to the roof, only to find Michael has gone. Selene narrates, concluding that she will find Michael and take back the world from the humans and lycans so the vampires can rebuild themselves as the human governments decided to declare war.
Josh Kovacs (Ben Stiller)is the building manager of The Tower, a high rise luxury apartment complex on Central Park West in New York City whose employees include concierge Charlie (Casey Affleck) his brother in law, Enrique (Michael Peña) the elevator operator, Lester (Stephen Henderson) the doorman nearing retirement, Odessa (Gabourey Sidibe) a maid and Miss Iovenko (Nina Arianda) who furtively studies for her bar exam at work. One morning Josh sees what appears to be a kidnapping of Tower tenant and wealthy businessman Arthur Shaw (Alan Alda). Josh gives chase and almost catches him when he is clotheslined by FBI agent Claire Denham (Téa Leoni). Denham explains that Shaw wasn’t being kidnapped he was attempting to flee arrest, accused of running a Ponzi scheme. Josh tells the Tower staff about Shaw’s arrest and explains that he gave Shaw their pension fund to invest. Josh, Charlie and Enrique visit Shaw under house arrest in his penthouse apartment. Josh tells Shaw that Lester attempted suicide after losing everything he had. Shaw expresses condolences but appears insincere. Josh responds by destroying the windows of a 1963 Ferrari 250 GT Lusso Shaw has on display in his apartment. The building’s General Manager (Judd Hirsch)is furious at Josh’s action and fires Josh, Charlie and Enrique. Josh meets Denham at a bar and she invites him to get drunk. As they drink she says Shaw must have had a cash safety net and suggests in jest that he find and steal it. Josh gathers Charlie, Enrique and former Tower tenant Mr Fitzhugh (Matthew Broderick)to draw up a plan to steal Shaw’s money. Charlie brings up the obvious drawback that they are not thieves. Josh enlists his neighbor, a petty criminal named Slide (Eddie Murphy) to help. Slide trains the team but realizes he cannot do the robbery because he doesn’t know how to crack the safe in Shaw’s apartment. Because of this they bring in Odessa whose family ran a locksmith business. Charlie tells Josh he’s been rehired as the Tower’s new manager and Charlie warns Josh to stay away or he will have him arrested. Denham then tells Josh that a hearing for Shaw has been scheduled for Thanksgiving during the Macy’s Day Parade to avoid publicity and Shaw will go free. Josh and his team decide to break into Shaw’s apartment during the parade. Josh, Charlie and Mr Fitzhugh reach Shaw’s apartment, they break down the false wall and find Shaw’s safe behind it, Odessa opens the safe but finds it empty. Slide and Fitzhugh struggle for Slide’s gun the gun goes off and a bullet hits the car, revealing gold underneath the Ferrari’s paint. They realize Shaw invested his cash in gold, had the gold melted down and cast into car parts and then assembled the car in his apartment where the gold would be hidden in plain sight. Josh finds a ledger of Shaw’s illegal finances in the car’s glove box. They decide to take the car and lower the car out the window into Fitzhugh’s old apartment six floors below. Then take it down to the lobby on top of an elevator. Just as they reach the lobby Agent Denham and Shaw return and take the same elevator back up. Denham sees Shaw’s safe and informs him that he did not declare the safe on an inventory of items taken when he was arrested, which is a violation of the conditions of his bail. She has him remanded back into custody. Denham sees Lester using a stolen truck to try to escape from the building. She catches up to him, assuming he is fleeing with the Ferrari but finds the truck empty. The FBI arrests him and Josh’s other accomplices. She personally handcuffs Josh and privately congratulates him. As Josh is being questioned by the FBI, Miss Iovenko arrives telling the FBI that she passed her bar exam three days ago and is acting as Josh’s attorney. She shows them Shaw’s ledger and tells them she will turn it over in exchange for everyone’s freedom. The FBI accepts on the condition that Josh, being the primary conspirator must serve a minimal two year sentence. The team retrieves the car from its hiding place in Shaw’s rooftop pool and send various parts of the car to Tower employees to compensate them for their lost pensions. As the movie ends Shaw begins his life sentence and Josh is booked into jail, a satisfied smile slowly forming on his face.
As a man walks out of the door, he is approached by an assassin from behind who slits his throat and escapes. The agents rush to the scene to find the man dead. However, they could not identify the assassin as he committed the murder in darkness. Later, CIA agents arrive on the scene and take charge. Former CIA operative Paul Shepherdson (Richard Gere) is retired. He is summoned by CIA director Tom Highland (Martin Sheen) to look into the murder. He is introduced to a young FBI agent Ben Geary (Topher Grace) who is an expert on a former Soviet operative known as Cassius, who Geary predicts to have committed the murder due to his signature throat slitting method. Paul and Ben visit one of Cassius’s proteges who had been locked up in prison, to learn the whereabouts of Cassius. They provide him with a radio and leave. The prisoner then swallows the batteries from the radio and fakes a stomach upset. After arriving at the hospital, he spits out the batteries overpowers the medical staff and escapes. In the basement’s garage, he is attacked by Paul who reveals himself to be Cassius. Cassius slits his throat. Upon investigating the crime scene Ben grows suspicious of Paul Meanwhile, a Russian terrorist and murderer Bozlovski (Tamer Hassan) has entered the US. As the investigation deepens Paul warns Ben to pull out, due to the possibility of harm to his family. Ben who has become obsessed with the idea that Paul is Cassius, starts his own parallel investigation. Meanwhile, Paul tries to contact Bozlovski in a factory where he escapes after an intense firefight. Ben examines another throat slitting murder of Bozlovski’s associate at the same site and is now convinced Paul is Cassius. Ben pieces together the events of Paul’s life and determines that not only is Paul actually Cassius but also that he is systematically murdering the people involved in the death of his wife and child, who were assassinated by Bozlovski. Paul tracks down Bozlovski to a shipyard warehouse. A while later, Ben also arrives at the plant. After being confronted with the evidence, Paul confesses everything. Paul claims he knows that Ben is a Russian spy, a fact which he learned at one of Ben’s informant drop offs. He is able to convince Ben that Bozlovski is the actual threat. Together they hunt down Bozlovski inside the shipyard’s warehouse. Bozlovski attacks Paul and Ben and in the ensuing struggle, a mortally wounded Paul slits Bozlovski’s throat using his garrote watch. However, Paul dies from his own injuries. As the only witness, FBI agent Ben relays the incident to his superiors and claims that Bozlovski was Cassius thereby securing Paul’s reputation and recognizing his heroism. As Ben departs CIA director (Highland) asks him whether he would ever consider working at the Central Intelligence Agency.
